A Refined Take on Self-Care: 3 Tips for Everyday Routine

Self care:

/sɛlfˈkɛː/

noun

  1. The practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health.
  2. The practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.

It’s easy to neglect ourselves and put our needs at the bottom of our to-do lists but making a few simple changes in our lifestyles can help put yourself at the forefront again.

Self- care is not only important for you but also for the people around you. When you’re feeling the best, you put your best foot forward and tend to exercise a little more kindness, forgiveness and patience; creating harmony in your environment and exuding positive energy out into the world.

So, what can you do to incorporate self care into your daily routine?

  • Ensure you’re getting a good nights sleep. Sleep isn’t just that thing we do at the end of the night. It influences the mood you carry into the next day and the productivity levels you’re going to have. A good night sleep is essentially the first thing you can do to ensure a positive and peaceful attitude for the upcoming day. Diffuse some essential oils before going to sleep to set a calming mood to help you wind down.

  • Get some exercise in. It’s the one thing you dread doing but appreciate after you’ve done it! Daily exercise will keep you physically and mentally fit. The endorphins released from a workout can  boost your mood and reduce stress and anxiety. You don’t have to do a body breaking workout to experience this! A simple walk through the park or some yoga at home with a lit candle will do the trick.

  • Learn how to say no to others and yes to yourself. This may be one of the hardest things to do but just as necessary as the above tips. Sometimes constantly saying yes and taking from your time and energy reserves can lead to burnout, anxiety and irritability. You might find yourself snapping at friends or exhausted at family gatherings which isn’t good for anyone. When your fuel is empty, politely decline requests from others in order to recharge and be your best self. Your loved ones will thank you for it.

  • Remember, Self care isn’t the same for everyone. It’s not the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants! Essentially it is whatever makes you feel physically and mentally better so do what works for you!
